The Sykes-Picot agreement, also known as the 1916 Asia Minor agreement was an secret agreement reached during World War 1 between the British and French governments pertaining to the portion of the Ottoman Empire among the Allied Powers. By the terms of agreement, Britain reserved the area Palestine, France was to get Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey. Russia was to get Constantinople and the Ottoman Armenian vilayets. Just a year later, this secret agreement became public. A copy of the Sykes-picot agreement was found in the Russian government’s archives. In the agreement, Russia would control Turkish Armenia and North regions in the Middle East. However, The true agreement was concluded on May 16th, 1916. The problem with this agreement was that the British originally promised both the Jewish and the Arab communities the region of Palestine in the Balfour declaration of 1917. Because of this, both the Jews and Arabs became infuriated with the French and British governments. This caused future conflicts among the nations.
