arab nationalism/ pan-arabism
Nationalism played a major role in bringing immense changes to the Middle East and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. After World War 1, Arab nationalism strengthened, giving support to Pan-Arabism. Pan-Arabism was a national movement that called for unification among the peoples and countries of the Arab World from the Arabian Peninsula to North Africa.I It was founded in the development of the "Arab Revolt." This form of nationalism emphasized their common history and language. Pan-Arabism was trying to free the Arabs and put them into their own unified state because the Arabs initially were dominated by other foreign powers.
During World War 1 however, the Arabs helped the allies against the Ottoman Empire. For this, the allies promised the Arabs promised the Arabs freedom from the Ottoman Empire. Ultimately, this promise was soon broken and the allies claimed the land rather than the Arabs. Throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s violent protests and revolts surfaced because of this broken agreement. While the number of Jews in Palestine increased, the tensions between the Arabs and the Jewish community increased as well. As a result, Arab Nationalists fought Zionists and other Jews over Palestine, or in which the Jews called, Israel.
